Who is Brianna:

I am an Afro-Latina, an immigrant, a female, a non-traditional student, a mother and living in remission with long-term effects from breast cancer. My life is a walking challenge against adversity in the medical field but yet... I am still here beating the odds and taking names. And I will not stop until M.D. or D.O. is behind my name working to be the best provider I can to my patients, helping to uplift future premeds who come after me and helping to empower other women, especially minority women who face extreme adversity in medicine.

“Motherhood is the job that you never “clock-out” from, it will be the longest shift of your life. But when I see the sparkle in my daughter’s eyes and she tells me how proud she is of me, I know that being a mom was truly meant to be my “starring role.”

Upon finishing my MPH I plan to apply to both Allopathic and Osteopathic Medical school programs in hopes of becoming a medical doctor.

In addition, I currently work as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and a Patient Care Tech (PCT) in the Emergency Department. I am also a mommy to both human and fur babies.

“As an EMT, I am the first one on the scene with sufficient enough training to help get the patient assessed, stabilized and ready for transport. That is an adrenaline rush and privilege that I do not take lightly or for granted.”

Life after scholarship...

I accepted a new grad position in oncology/med-surg unit. There are no words that describe how I am truly feeling. All I know is this moment is what I fought so hard for. Now I get the opportunity to help people who are dealing with the same thing I dealt with. And that makes what I went through so worth it. #blessed #oncology #futureRN#dreamsdocometrue

“I can’t believe I graduated yesterday!!! It has been a difficult journey and I finally made it!! I couldn’t have done it without the help from my family and friends. Winning the award for highest GPA was the best part of the night!!”

The most important advice I can give to people going into a nursing school would be to make friends. When I started this program, I was so scared because Well let me be honest I suck at making friends. But let me tell you I have made the best of friends with these three amazing women. They build me up, keep me going, and make me laugh my butt off until it hurts. Just wanted to take a minute and thank @alexx_xox @megfew32@_._krissymb_._ for the amazing friendship you have shared with me!! Almost there ladies!!! #futureRN #friendshipgoals

““It’s Not Whether You Get Knocked Down, It’s Whether You Get Up.” I may fall down 7 times, but I will stand up 8! It’s easy to get demotivated by all of the stress and shortcomings in vet school; I may not be the smartest in my class, but I am a hard worker and for what I lack in talent, I make up for in my diligence and willingness to never give up.”

I grew up caring for many different types of pets and can’t think of a more satisfying career than to be saving animals lives on a daily basis. Veterinary medicine combines my love for animals with my passion for science. By shadowing physicians, I discovered that one of the aspects of the profession that entices me most is the wide range of activities and responsibilities that a veterinarian performs. Within a day a veterinarian can work on a wide range of cases varying from cancer, to general illness, to injury, to births. Every day serves new mysteries and challenges.

Who is Candice:

I am Mother to two beautiful kids 👫✨. RN💊🏥. Two time Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor 🎗

When someone goes through a bone marrow transplant, day 0 (or the day you get your stem cells) is now considered their rebirthday. Today is my second re birthday. This one is big because my doctor told me if I made it to two years without a relapse I am cured from the cancer!! On another note today is also the anniversary of my mom's death. It has been 15 years. Can't believe how long it has been. And yet it is still to this day hard to deal with. As new challenges arise and I become in need of advice from my mother she isn't here to help. I hope I'm making you proud with my decisions. I love you mom #survivor #hodgkinslymphoma

My girls made me rebirthday cards!! They are the best kids anyone could ask for!!

First day of school!!! Emma-4th grade. Hayden-6th grade. Judi-7th grade. Can't believe how big they are getting.

Who is Marlena:

I am a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) student at the University of Melbourne, Australia and a graduate in Biology (Zoology) from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. For the past two years I have been acquiring field and laboratory research experience to better prepare for graduate education. I have garnered a better understanding for the research process as a Ronald E. McNair and Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Scholar in Dr. Kristopher Lappin’s Laboratory. My current research focuses on the geographic variation of sexual dimorphism amongst populations of the Northern Alligator lizard (Elgaria coerulea).

My New Years resolution is to work on creating a healthy balance in my life. I need to do a better job of putting myself higher on my own 'to do' list, and creating time for work but also time for play.
I hope that your New Year is filled with success, health, prosperity and happiness. Some of my New Years resolutions include reading a non-school related book, creating at least 5 videos, and being able to do the splits.
